標題： The space of time in visual narratives
摘要：This paper examines the visual realization of the cognitive metaphors of time and space in the context of visual narratives (exemplified by Japanese comics), and provides an approach to explaining why invisible time flow in a story can be expressed through visible page and panel spaces, and why it is possible to substitute panel background with patterns that help specify the state of happening. The theory of magnitude in the field of neuroscience offers physiological evidence for the materialization and visualization of time. It is proposed that the common metric between time, space, and quantity has set the foundation for representing longer durations with more words, more perceptible time lapses with larger onomatopoeias, and more intensive actions with stronger/denser effect lines in visual narratives. The quantification and magnitude of visual components are usually in line with the duration and intensity of their embedded temporal perspectives as well as other physical impacts.
